Children’s teeth are much more sensitive than adult teeth so they need to be taken care of in a safe manner to avoid issues further down the line. Although a lot of parents are aware of making sure their kids use soft bristles, they often overlook that the kind of toothpaste a child uses is just as important. So, what needs to be taken into consideration when buying toothpaste for your child?

Things To Consider

The most obvious thing to consider would be the flavor. Make sure that your kid is brushing with a flavor that will make them want to brush their teeth! According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about 20% children from ages 5-11 have an untreated cavity. Many times this comes from parents neglecting to realize that their child is not brushing their teeth because they dislike the flavor of their toothpaste. However, taste is not the most important thing to consider. When buying toothpaste for your child, look for the following:

Fluoride: Make sure that you are buying toothpaste that has fluoride in it, especially if they are under the age of 6. This will be critical in keeping young enamel protected from bacteria.

Look for ADA approval: When looking at the toothpaste tube, make sure it is toothpaste that has been certified by the American Dental Association. If it is not present, there is no guarantee that product has passed safety and health standards for your child.

Avoid abrasives: Toothpaste can sometimes contain harsh abrasives that help polish teeth. Although adult teeth can handle these, children’s teeth are not developed for the higher abrasion levels and can ultimately damage their enamel. Even more specifically, watch out for toothpastes that have high amounts of phosphates and alumina.

Pediatric Dentist in Des Moines

If you are having a hard time deciphering what toothpaste to get for your child, we are more than happy to offer recommendations!
